Universal Network Driver Interface (UNDI) is a programming API that simplifies network programming. This API abstracts ethernet devices to allow x86 based systems to implement simple, network-based bootstrap loaders. The PXE standard also specifies a client side BIOS programming interface called UNDI. This protocol was developed by Sun Microsystems and is an industry standard for remote file access across a common network. PXE solutions can deliver kernels and initial bootstrap software to client nodes using TFTP. Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) defines a simple UDP protocol for delivering files over a network.

PXE solutions use DHCP to deliver initial network configuration options to client nodes. In addition, software vendors may extend the protocol by defining their own DHCP options.
